The Barnacle Lamp
A lamp made in Helsinki from sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima), sourced in Sweden as a side-stream from existing algae processing. The algae forms the fibre of the shade, and its manufacturing process shapes the colour and the quality of the light passing through.
A sconce for hallways at home & in hotels.
Its rounded, shell-like form takes inspiration from the small intertidal creatures that cling to the rocks of the Finnish coastline. Like them, it holds onto many surfaces: it can rest on a table or attach to a wall or ceiling, giving a soft ambient light. Patterns and surface finishes lend a mineral quality to a material more often associated with plant-like textures. Algae content ranges from 20% in the pearl-toned bioPBS material to 80% in the darker SeaResidue oval inclusion.
For hotels, restaurants and beach resorts, it is both a light and a storytelling object: a local marine identity brought indoors, and a sign of how algae washing onto the shore can become a resource. Made in Finland by Sealevä.
