Littoral Necklace: Gyrosigma littorale - Diatom Jewellery
The Gyrosigma littorale is a single-celled brown microalga, a diatom, invisible to the naked eye, encased in a transparent siliceous shell of extraordinary geometric complexity. Nicknamed the Surf for its wave-like form.
The most intricate thing in the ocean, worn close to the skin.
Diatoms produce a quarter of the Earth's oxygen. Their siliceous shells are sensitive to pollution: the first to disappear when ocean health declines. This piece is both a portrait of something extraordinary and a quiet argument for why it matters. 5% of every purchase is donated to the Tara Ocean Foundation in support of open ocean science.
Arrives in a jewellery box with a handwritten note, tissue paper, and satin organza ribbon. Made to order within three weeks.
