The Gyrosigma littorale is a single-celled brown microalga, a diatom, invisible to the naked eye, encased in a transparent siliceous shell of extraordinary geometric complexity. Nicknamed the Surf for its wave-like form.

Diatoms produce a quarter of the Earth's oxygen. Their siliceous shells are sensitive to pollution: the first to disappear when ocean health declines.
